The most important historical site of Halkidiki, ancient Stagira, is located on the Liotopi Peninsula, next to present-day Olympiada. Touring the area is a real pleasure. If you want to see everything, know that you will need at least 2 to 3 hours and do not miss the coastal path, which is wonderful. The city was founded in 665 BCE by Ionian settlers who arrived from the island of Andros, and later settlers also arrived from Halkida. The sources of antiquity are very accurate regarding the location of the city. In his Geography, Strabo places it south of ancient Akanthos, in a coastal area, and mentions the existence of a small islet across from the city, named Kapros (apparently the current islet of Kafkanas). It is characteristic that the same name is attributed to the port of Stagira, while many coins of the city had the boar [kapros=boar] as a symbol.
